How @Curlbox Founder @Myleik Teele is shaping millennial entrepreneurs with her #MyTaughtYou Mentoring Brand

Myleik Teele is a brand GENIUS. Avid Reader. CEO. Business Owner. Mentor in my head. Girl Boss! Bout her BUSINESS. Straight Shooter. Just LOVE HER!

At The Ladies of Business Conference, I had the pleasure of having a 1 x 1 with Myleik to ask her a few minor questions (nothing too pressing, because I sure could have talked to her all night).

Your My Taught You brand is very transparent- Mentoring to everyone, what made you choose this as your next venture after CurlBox?

Myleik: I probably was doing My Taught You before CurlBox, and I think CurlBox just got so big that it eclipsed what I was doing before, but I was always doing it. I grew up from a very private mother and I used to feel like– the pain is in the secrets. If people think they know things about you or they feel like they can say something to you—it kind of over powers you and I’m just like.. this is who I am, this is what I struggle with- I’m no different than anybody else. You can still succeed after failing. You can succeed and make mistakes, you know what I mean? I felt like as a young woman of color that it was something that was so necessary.

Why did you choose your demographic to be young women of color?

Myleik: Because I felt like growing up I didn’t have that. I grew up in Los Angeles and a lot of the women who helped me get ahead professionally were not black women. They were white women, Jewish women, like people out in Hollywood—those were the people who took a chance on me. So for me, I asked what would happen if we took a chance on each other? We are so afraid to, for a HOST of reasons but it’s kind of like—feeling like I’m so committed to helping young women of color, heal themselves, access themselves, take inventory- so that they can live a full life, because so many of us feel like we aren’t living a full life.

What was one of your biggest entrepreneurial mistakes thus far and how did you bounce back?

Myleik: At the very beginning of my career, I used to—Everything that everybody said hit me so hard, and I used to be so hard. I used to be the “Meek Mill” of this whole thing. Running on twitter and type typing and it’s like “oh my God,” and I was so young! And It’s like you don’t think it’s going to hurt until someone kicks you in the heart and you’re like fuck this—I’m ready to fight anybody. I learned that when people— what people say about you says more about them than it does about you. And once you know that people are speaking from their insecurities, their pain, their whatever you go—girl this ain’t even about me!

Isn’t she just marvelous? Even in a brief moment – she drops so many gems!

At the conference in her keynote address, Teele explained how she continues to trail blaze in her business, remaining current, innovative and fresh. She also shared key tips to successful networking, and poured words of encouragement into a room full of current and aspiring women entrepreneurs.

Behind The Brush with Celebrity Makeup Artist Kluermoi

Kluermoi, is a traveling celebrity make-up artist, educator, and beauty blogger. Having done makeup all over the world, we had the pleasure to catch up with her for a sit down and ask some awesome questions about where she’s from, how she got into make-up and even some quick everyday on the go make-up tips! Check out the interview and excerpts below!

Kluermoi, which is dutch for “Pretty Colors”, is a name she created to describe the art she brings to life on the faces of her clients. Born in the South American country of Suriname, she is fluent in Dutch.

SURINAME FLAG

After recently moving from New York she is now glad to call Atlanta her home, where she is enjoying the change of pace and scenery.

You used to work as a Paralegal, what caused you to take that courageous leap of faith and focus on your dream?

Kluermoi: Because you only have one life to live, so you should go out for whatever you want to do. Also, my brother died when he was 19, and he was extremely courageous and he was someone who would do anything he put his mind to and because he’s no longer able to do that, I want to continue to carry that in my life in a way of honoring his.

What are 5 quick beauty tips for everyday women on-the-go?

1. If you’re not into doing a full face makeup look, get a good bb cream and you can make your own, the info is on my IG (@Kluermoi).

2. If you have oily skin, make sure you’re walking around with a blotting powder or setting powder.

3. Make sure you match your foundation to your neck and your face *super important*.

4. Always have a bold color lipstick in your purse, as you never know if someone may ask you to go for drinks after work, and you always want to have a bold lip in your purse to be able to switch it up!

5. ALWAYS have a good personality and SMILE! 🙂

What is your mantra for the year?

I want you guys to just always keep in mind that every failure is a lesson to be learned. When you fail make sure you get back up!

You can find out more about Kluermoi and get more information about one on one make-up classes if you’re in the Atlanta area by visiting her Instagram page, or through email at bookkluermoi@gmail.com

Happy Holi-Slay! 4 poppin’ lippies to sleigh the holiday

I don’t always wear make up and lipstick, but when I do…

She’s B-E-A-T honey, OKAYYYY?!

she wins

I like the holidays because it’s a time where I actually have a reason to get dressed up, and whip out my brushes for a good ol’ holiday stunt sesh. This Christmas I’ll be traveling to my hometown of Cincinnati, SLAYING in 4 of my favorite lippies this season.

Check out my go-to lippies below, and seriously.. Be like me and cop them. They’re flawless!

  1. ELF Red

img_2069

Super cheap pick up at my local Target, Idk maybe 3.99? But it looks so cute and classic! Definitely a good, go to color!

2. Colourpop- Westie

img_2030

I love this color because it gives you a nice subtle pink look. At first I hated pinks because I thought they made my lips look ashy (LOL) don’t judge me, I’m very basic sometimes. I also love Colourpop because you definitely can NOT beat their prices. $5? Bloooooop! Sign me up for 5, Linda!

3. MAC Media X Colourpop Fighter

img_2068

Now I was going for a more cranberry tone with this color because I didn’t want to pull out my Melt Dark Room (and that super matte is really harsh on my sensitive lips) so I decided to start mixing and matching my colors and I came up with this! Media is a satin and is a deeper tone, but the Colourpop Fighter has a brighter red tone which gave me the perfect cranberry color I was looking for!

4. MAC Matte Royal

This is a newbie to my collection and let. me. tell. you. I LIVE! Every time I put on this lip, I just want to vogue down to my favorite Azealia Banks track! When I originally bought this the makeup artist at Mac did the damn thing pulling it together on this face honey! I loved it!

The event was filled with clients, and friends of the firm, giving a great celebration and opportunity to mingle and network with other business owners and entrepreneurs. The decor was great, and the atmosphere was filled with many working women supporting as well as men, interested in connecting with likeminded individuals for a great cause of celebration.

The B Firm PR got it’s start 4 years ago as the two sisters decided to take an issue of genuine relationships lacking in the business industry to building a firm with clients in sports, entertainment, fashion, and more.

Thanks for the invite Erica! We can’t wait to see what else you are cooking up in the city!

Until next time, we’ll see you in the city!

[Feature] :: How Altrichia “A. Lekay” Cook built a brand from a Body Image Issue

We all have insecurities when it comes to our bodies, but how many of us actually take the initiative to solve common problems that we have outside of what can be corrected with physical fitness? Patents have been around for years to allow creators and inventors to retain exclusive rights to their property, but have any of you ever had the burning desire to cover up a cosmetic problem for the betterment of others?

At the Dream Project Symposium, I had the pleasure to speak with an innovative problem solver who was presented with an issue, and when it couldn’t be solved to her satisfaction, created her own resolution.

Altrichia Cook (@Allusionsbabe) at The Dream Symposium 2015

Altrichia Cook (@Allusionsbabe) at The Dream Symposium 2015

Altrichia “A. Lekay” Cook faced a dilemma when she was preparing for a vacation in San Juan, Puerto Rico and shopping for high-waisted swimwear to cover her abdominal imperfections. While department stores and online boutiques offered high-waisted swimwear options, they didn’t come high enough to mask those imperfections.

“In March 2013, I aimlessly searched for a high waist swimsuit, ordering online and in department stores, but the ones that I found weren’t actually high enough to mask my abdominal imperfections, so I took matters into my own hands and I designed my own.” said Cook. “Upon using social media, I uploaded my photos and my comments and messages went haywire, and prior to that, I had been exploring different business ideas and sitting in my office one day — it was like a lightbulb went off, and I turned my idea into a brand.”

While some business and and brands are carefully thought out and executed, great ideas and businesses can sometimes come on a whim. A go-getter, Cook was a teen mother, who birthed and raised her son while simultaneously working 2 jobs and getting her degree from Florida State University.

“Within my brand, I do a lot of motivational speaking engagements to empower, inspire and uplift women,” she said. “Overcoming all my prior obstacles helped and prepared me to be a successful businesswoman.”

What’s your biggest goal for your brand and your business?

We’re a luxury and lifestyle brand, so I plan to continue to empower women to live a fun, fierce, fearless life through my brand and to continue to do a lot of motivational, empowering workshops & brunches to empower, uplift and encourage women. I hope to land my swimwear in department stores as well and become a global brand.

Cook currently has a Master’s degree from Florida A&M University and works as a probation officer in Florida as she continues to build her swimwear brand to a global level.

[RECAP] :: MiNX & Mingle

Minx Diva and I

Minx Diva and I

In February, I attended an intimate preview of MiNxDiVa’s exclusive nail salon in Buckhead. The event hosted by Erica Dias of TheBfirmPR and sponsored by Premis Cognac, offered a behind the scenes look into the new luxury experience.

MiNxDiVa provides a personalized, exclusive luxury nail experience and specializes in Minx nails.

“I got Minx Diva from mastering the process of the minx nails style. My co-workers would always call me “diva” because I would always have heels on, look cute so they started calling me diva and doing minx nails, I became the Minx Diva.”

The intimate setting was also the location of the salon where there were light hors d’oeuvres and the opportunity to get a first hand view of the salon space. While you may have to pay a tad bit more for the services, you can trust and believe this salon experience will deliver.

Offering a chic all white interior, the entire set up was welcoming. I can see exactly why her cater to you style services are so exclusive. Being served fabulous pink, Premis Eaux-Di-Vie Cognac and catered light eats, I was able to mingle with MiNxDiVa and find out a lot more about her background and experiences.

MiNxDiVa recently moved to Atlanta in December on a leap of faith with dreams of launching her exclusive nail service. Originally from Fayetteville, North Carolina, she had experience as a manicurist alongside her aunt and brother. Her networking and growth led her to dream larger and hone in on her craft and take the leap of faith to Atlanta.

You can check out MiNxDiVa on IG and at Minxdiva.com.
